Why Disabled and Chronically Ill People May Be Your Best Employees
In this insightful and impactful keynote, speaker Roi Shternin will explain why hiring and retaining disabled and chronically ill individuals can provide significant benefits for your organization.
Roi will draw on his own experiences living with chronic illness and invisible disabilities to demonstrate how these employees can serve as highly skilled, dedicated, and innovative contributors. Their experiences managing challenges on a daily basis help cultivate valuable attributes like resilience, flexibility, time management, and problem-solving – key strengths that all successful teams need.
Attendees will learn why a diverse, inclusive workforce is not just a moral imperative but good for business. Research shows disabled employees have higher retention rates and take less sick time overall. Roi will profile model employers who have tapped into this untapped talent pool and experienced measurable gains in productivity, employee satisfaction, and brand reputation as a result.
Walk away from understanding why embracing neurodiversity and disability inclusion is a competitive advantage in today’s tight labor market. Building a Patient-Centered Healthcare System
In this thought-provoking keynote, patient advocate Roi Shternin will explain why a seismic shift is needed to create a truly patient-centered healthcare system.
Drawing from his own experiences of feeling dismissed and unsupported by doctors, Roi will outline the gaps and structural flaws that currently exist from a patient’s perspective. He will shed light on all-too-common problems like lack of compassion, poor communication, not addressing social determinants of health, and not seeing the whole human being.
Attendees will learn how the current provider-centric model prioritizes the business of medicine over the health and well-being of individuals. Using real case studies, Roi will illustrate the negative consequences this has for patient outcomes and the overall cost of care.
However, Roi’s message is one of hope and a vision for positive change. He will profile the patient-empowering initiatives and advocacy organizations working to put control, dignity and choice back into the hands of those receiving care. Roi will motivate and equip healthcare leaders to enact reforms that make patient needs and preferences the driving force in decision making at every level of the system.
After this keynote, attendees will better understand what truly patient-centered care looks like from the perspective of someone living with chronic illness or disability every day. They will leave empowered to drive the collaborative, preventative and holistic models of healthcare that patients deserve.

Rejecting the doctor’s dire pronouncement he would never walk again, nor marry or have children, Shternin regains full control of his life. A real-life medical mystery turned into a medical wonder, he diagnosed himself with a not-so-rare condition (POTS Syndrome). At 27, Shternin taught himself to walk and talk again, then persevered through the following years of periodic relapses. Fully rehabilitated, on reintegrating back into society, he discovered his mission: patients need a revolution. He founded several health charities, medical startups and was featured on TED. His newest project is The Patient School, where people learn self-advocacy to take charge of their medical journey and discover how to gamify and baby step their way to increased health and vitality.
